Farmers Christina and Rob grow over 25 acres of specialty vegetables, fruit and herbs on family land in Sandwich, Illinois where a parcel of their land is certified organic and the other will be certified next Summer.
They manage soil and plant health through cultivation, crop rotation, and cover crops. They control pests and diseases by selecting varieties that do well in our region, pruning to physically remove problems, attracting beneficial insects that prey on the "bad bugs", and using biological soaps and oils. They believe that organic farmers have a responsibility to build soil health, to utilize air and water resources in a sustainable manner, to provide financial stability to all farm workers, and to teach others about environmental stewardship.
